Navigating Undergrad & Building your STEM Identity

This workshop is for you if:

  • You are looking to pursue a degree or career in STEM.

  • You want an enriching and exciting undergraduate experience.

  • You wish STEM fields were more diverse!

Workshop details:

This workshop is about storytelling. I want to share how Kearny BST acted as a stepping

stone for me to pursue a higher education in biology; Beyond this, Kearny BST helped

develop my STEM identity, especially as a woman of color. Since then, I’ve had an

incredibly well-rounded undergraduate experience— from volunteering with my sorority, to

studying abroad in Spain, to working at a Neuroscience lab. I hope my story serves as a

testament to the fact that dreams are worth following, and that Kearny High School is where

all of mine began!

Meet Sara Toumi

Student, UCSD

I am a proud 2019 Kearny BST alumni. I am also currently a fourth year undergraduate student at UC San Diego studying Molecular and Cell Biology, as well as Bioethics. Upon graduation, I’m pursuing a research position at UC San Francisco during my gap year, before applying to Ph.D programs. My primary interests are in genetics and gene-editing systems, as well as how we might use them to address various biological questions.

It’s cheesy but, always follow your dreams!
